Art history can be captured by different art forms. One of those art forms is song. We have talked about how the history of outdoor sculpture is captured in outdoor sculpture exhibits such as those at the World's Fair. The 1893 World's Fair in Chicago included an outdoor sculpture exhibition. The spirit of this exhibition was captured in the worlds of the "Columbia's World's Fair Song" below. Consider these words of the song:

Noble buildings pure and chaste-

How marble white they gleam-

Splendour has redeemed the waste-

Grand as a poet's dream-

All honour to the artists true-

Those stately piles (post or beam) who reard-

And to the women honour due-

Who aided them and cheered-

What does this song tell us about the role of beauty in the Chicago World's Fair?

What was the role of the artist at the fair?

What words are used to describe the beautiful things the artists created?

How could the ideas about art at the fair have become and inspiration for today's outdoor sculpture?

How can music be used to tell us more about art and the beauty it gives us?

How can music be used with art to tell us more about beauty in our world?

Check out how music and art have collided to make "rock music." As you watch this video, think about how history has shaped and changed how we look at outdoor sculpture. Also, think about how history has changed how artists make outdoor sculpture. Finally, think about how history has shaped and changed outdoor sculpture in our own community.

This sculpture emits musical sounds when people get close to it, or interact with it!

Music and art can change a lot over time. In 1893, sheet music shared the ideas, inspiration and enthusiasms of the time. Check out this video (made 120 years after the "Columbia's Worlds Fair Song") to see how music and art are now being used to share new ideas:

Art of the past has influenced the art of today. The outdoor sculpture in our community is the result of historic influences. Time, experiences, ideas and inspiration of the past come together to make the art we see in downtown Howell today. The art we see around us didn't happen in a vacuum. It was shaped, influenced and molded by a rich history. History influences art and art influences history: in our world, in our nation, in our state, in our county, in our community, in our school and in our homes. Even the art that we make in our classroom has been influenced by history. When people see art around them, it changes the way they make art and think about art.
